System of Prostheses

System of Prostheses is a series of installations that examine the 21st Century Cherokee diaspora and the search for cultural meaning and sense of place within a landscape of despotic consumerism and technocratic violence.

The Way the Sun Rises Over Rivers Is No Different Than the Way the Sun Sets  Over Oceans, 2007, mixed-media installation (three channel video, text, sound, artificial burning log). Currently exhibited in Remix: New Modernities in a Post-Indian World at the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of the American Indian, New York City. This work examines the cognitive geography between the Illinois River of the Cherokee Nation and the Pacific Ocean beaches of California. Installation view, text in Cherokee syllabary.




Prosthetic Faith, 2007, mixed-media installation (video, text, sound, prosthetic feet, artificial burning log). This work explores the search for religious and cultural context and meaning in the artificial environments of urban and suburban landscapes. Installation view detail, seven prosthetic feet circling artificial burning log, 12’ diameter.




Just As I Am, 2006, mixed-media installation (video, text, sound, prosthetic leg). Accessioned into the permanent collection of the Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, AZ. This work recontextualizes the concept of  phantom limb syndrome as a metaphor for the urban Indian experience. Installation view, text in Cherokee syllabary.
